April 1, 1971 The first Inter-University Research Institute, the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics (now known as the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization), was established as a national inter-university research institute not belonging to a particular university.
May 1, 1972 The National Inter-University Research Institute, National Institute of Japanese Literature was established.
June 7, 1974 The National Inter-University Research Institute, National Museum of Ethnology was established.
April 14, 1981 The National Inter-University Research Institute, National Museum of Japanese History was established.
May 21, 1987 The National Inter-University Research Institute, International Research Center for Japanese Studies was established.
June 28, 1989 The Law on the Establishment of National Schools having been amended, the National Inter-University Research Institutes were renamed the Inter-University Research Institutes.
April 1, 2001 The Inter-University Research Institute, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature was established.
April 1, 2004 Establishment of the National Institutes for the Humanities (NIHU), an Inter-University Research Institute Corporation made up of the five above-mentioned Inter-University Research Institutes.
September 25, 2004 Open lectures and seminars commemorating the establishment of NIHU were held at the Hitotsubashi Memorial Hall.
October 29, 2004 A joint-ceremony commemorating establishment of the four Inter-University Research Institute Corporations was held at the Hitotsubashi Memorial Hall.
