Promotion of Area Studies

NIHU started the "Project to Promote Area Studies" from FY 2006. This is a project to establish research initiatives and networks, together with relevant universities and institutes, for the purpose of understanding the cultures, and social situations of outstanding current issues in designated areas.

Selection of regions to be studied and setting research plans

The "Committee to Promote Area Studies" consisting of academic experts was established, and selected Islamic regions and modern China as regions to be studied. Basic research plans for both regions were being developed at the same time, and the plan is already set for the Islamic region.

Promotion of Islamic area studies

NIHU and the universities involved had jointly established a basis for research focusing on Islamic area studies as shown below. An initiative to extend the research and establish a research network is also being carried out, mainly implemented by the Research Center on Modern Islamic Regions established in Waseda University. These endeavors have resulted in the joint establishment of the following research programs.

->The Research Center on Modern Islamic Regions, as part of the Research Institute on Islamic Regions in Waseda University

-> The Islamic Region Research Section as part of the Center for the Development of Next Generation Humanities in Tokyo University
